About the All Kenyan Moot Court Competition

The All Kenyan Moot Court Competition (AKMCC) is an annual national moot court competition hosted by the Kenyatta University School of Law (KUSOL) and involving all Law Schools in Kenya. The competition focuses mainly on matters of International law and is set to become one of the largest annual gatherings in the Kenyan legal calendar.

This budding & highly promising competition is geared towards building and underscoring the pivotal role of scholarly research, seasoned analytical and advocacy skills as well as the development of aplomb in making public presentations; an invaluable investment for all in the legal profession. We moreover endeavor to create a mentorship relationship between the legal profession and the law students even as we champion the development of Kenyan jurisprudence on matters of International Law. Towards this, we seek to indulge leading & willing organizations as well as law firms.

The inaugural Competition was officially opened by the Honorable Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya, Prof. Githu Muigai in February, 2013 and presided over by Justice Lee Muthoga, Judge of the former International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The theme of the Competition was, “Safeguarding territorial integrity for peaceful coexistence”. The case problem sought to interrogate both national and international law governing emerging as well as looming territorial disputes within the East African Region. The Competition was held in the Kenyatta University School of Law’s State-of-the-Art Moot facility courtesy of the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Olive Mugenda as well as the Students’ Association. 9 teams from 3 Universities participated.

The 2nd edition of the Competition took place on the14th and 15th of February 2014. This edition was officially opened by the Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya, Mr Eric Mutua and presided over by Hon. Prof J.B Ojwang, Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya aided by Prof. PLO Lumumba, a former Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) and Dr. Linda Musumba, a former Dean of Kenyatta University School of Law (KUSOL). The theme of this edition of the Competition was, “Safeguarding Human Rights through Combating Corruption”.

The case problem sought to interrogate Kenya’s anti-corruption laws, its international obligation to prosecute for corruption as well as the place of international law in domestic courts. Of great interest was the development of the argument by scholars on grand-corruption being a crime against humanity. This was done in two segments, the Moot Court segment and for the first time we had students presenting research papers on a topic drawn from the theme. Judges for the Competition were drawn from, the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice, The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of Kenya, Kenya School of Law, The UNHCR, leading law firms in Nairobi as well as from the participating faculties. 9 Universities participated presenting 17 teams to the Competition.

The Competition drew immense support from the corporate world and was held in partnership with Transparency International Kenya, The National Council for Law Reporting (Kenya Law), Media Development in Africa (MEDEVA), The Nation Media Group as well as the Kenyatta University Students’ Association (KUSA) and the University Management. The organizations, apart from providing financial support for the Competition gave internship and pupilage placements for the winners of the Competition. Kenya Law is pledged to have the best research papers presented at the Competition published. The event received media coverage in the two leading newspapers in Kenya as well as the “Inside the Judiciary” e-Magazine .
Preparations are underway for the 3rd edition of the Competition to be held in partnership with and under the patron-ship of the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice.
