The programme is designed to teach the student highly specialized evidence-based research. It is designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, independent learning, and effective oral and written communication of research findings.

The philosophy of this programme is to nurture and produce individuals who can create knowledge at a highly specialized level to respond to emerging societal questions.

The rationale of the Programme:

The goal of this programme is to train the student in highly specialized evidence-based research by fostering critical thinking and effective communication with the aim of helping students to contribute to their fields with innovative solutions.

Admission Requirements for the Proposed Programme:

Applicants to this programme should be holders of a Master of Arts in History, Archaeology, or Political Science from Kenyatta University or any other accredited university.

Mode and Structure of Delivery:

This Programme is delivered through both the blended and online learning methods. Full-time students learn through the blended methodology that involves face-to-face seminars and lectures, and online seminars, while for the Digital Learning Programme students, the course is designed to be taught through the online mode.

Programme Duration:

The PhD programme is designed to last three years. During the first year, students will be taken through coursework. In the second year, students develop proposals before proceeding with fieldwork research during the third year.

Curriculum highlights:

Students enrolled in this programme are expected to do coursework during the first year of study. The PhD coursework consists of 10 units; two cores and 8 electives. In the second year, the student proceeds to develop a research proposal before proceeding to conduct fieldwork research and write a thesis in the third year of study.
