Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy |
Introduction |
The need to establish the programme of International Relations and Diplomacy was a natural response to a number of challenges relating to contemporary global governance system, in the context of ever increasing number of actors on the international scene and improvement in telecommunications. For instance, Africa has experienced a lot in the area of security and politics and economic development that have wider implications not only on the region but also globally. In addition, the conflict in the Horn of Africa since the 1970s has had an adverse effect in the East African region. Complex interdependence and globalization has facilitated increased transnational networks making it necessary to have professionals capable of influencing policy in line with national interests. |
Programme Objective |
The objective of the Programme is to contribute towards the development of international affairs practitioners with key competencies and skills required to respond to the ever evolving regional and globalized international security system. |
Justification/ Rationale |
The Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy programme is an integral component of the Department of Security, Diplomacy and Security Studies’ response to the increasing demand for analytical and skilled practitioners in the field of international relations in an ever-changing global context. The international system is in constant change which demands the traditional ways and skills of transacting in international affairs to be modified. Traditional institutions such as ‘state sovereignty’ are consistently changed, there are many new actors and institutions that were not envisaged post Second World War. Future diplomats, ambassadors, humanitarian actors, activists and international public servants require to be equipped with the dynamic skills to analyze, negotiate, and communicate to a diverse audience. The complexities in the global arena, where non-state actors such terror groups, media and multinational corporations are increasing becoming assertive participants, those engaged with them whether as diplomats or humanitarian workers can no-longer rely on traditional skills, they need modern communications skills and competencies. The Programme seeks to close this gap. |
