The Programme offers postgraduate students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge and understanding of the multidimensional aspects of international, regional and national security demands and threats. It aims at inculcating in the learners critical skills and competencies at the nexus of theory, policy and practice with a view to prepare them for career in security management.

Programme Objective

The objective of the Programme is to train personnel to be well-grounded and competent in managing security through application of scientific and technological strategies.

Justification/

Rationale

Security organizations worldwide face multiple and increasingly complex challenges brought about by globalization, emerging crimes, the rise of digital and ICT society as well as radical attitudes. Consequently, findings from Training Needs Assessment conducted by Kenyatta University in collaboration with the Kenya National Police Service in 2014 noted that the capacity of security managers and law enforcement agencies to deal with crime trends is under constant pressure. In Kenya for example, stakeholders from a curriculum review workshop held on 29th and 30th May, 2019 observed that the situation has partly been intensified by proliferation of small arms and light weapons, inadequate resources, poor investigative technological and limited crime prevention techniques. These challenges as noted by stakeholders were found to have an implication in the security environment hence underscoring the need for well-trained security managers and policy makers.
