PH.D. in Peace and Conflict Management

Introduction

Resolving conflicts world-wide has for a long time focused on formal methods such as negotiation, mediations, arbitration and use of force. However, due to increasing conflict hot spots around the world and the escalation and de-escalation of the same leading to protracted conflicts, it has been deemed important to increase training in informal and non-formal methods of resolving conflicts at the postgraduate level. This will ensure that conflicts are handled from the grass root by numerous stakeholders thus reducing chances of protraction.

Programme Objective

The programme objective is to train highest calibre of personnel in peace and conflict issues for the country as well as in the global arena who will be proactive in conflict management for peaceful international system.

Justification/

Rationale

The programme is informed by the fact that there is need for training in peace and conflict issues. Only five universities in Kenya provide training in peace and conflict programmes which leaves a big gap which this programme seeks to address. Over 300,000 personnel working in peace and security sector do not have bachelors, masters and advanced degrees in peace and conflict and require training in the same. The Horn of Africa is one of the most volatile regions of the world and it requires knowledge and training in peace and conflict issues and this can only take place through formal training which this programme promises to deliver. Kenya has many conflict hot spots which have not dissipated despite formal and non-formal interventions which a programme such as this will help in ameliorating by providing well trained personnel for formal and non-formal employment. Kenya still sends many citizens to train in peace and conflict issues in expensive programmes abroad thereby loosing foreign currency and so providing this programme will save Kenya a lot of foreign exchange.
