PH.D in Security Studies

Introduction

The course will ground the students in academic research that will inform policy formulation and implementation as well as prepare them for security services in Private Corporation and emergency management fields among others. Specifically the programme provides a forum through which the learners will map up, discuss and reflect on various security issues in research, policy and practice at strategic points. Throughout the course the emphasis will be on analytical and technical skills, critical and creative thinking as well as reflexivity to facilitate a broader and in depth understanding of emerging security debates, challenges and concerns as well as solutions for security problems.

Programme Objective

The programme objective is to equip learners will critical and creative thinking, broad knowledge and relevant skills to effectively, efficiently, professionally and diligently provide strategic leadership, policy directions 22 and carry out scientific research as well as provision of other forms of services in the security sector.

Justification/

Rationale

Security threats whether national, regional or global continue to be dynamic, complex and sophisticated partly due to globalization, increased security vulnerability associated with critical infrastructure and the rapid evolution of information technology. On the other hand, the capacity of security managers develop effective mitigating policies for coping with emerging and dynamic security threats is constantly challenged partly due to limited mitigation skills, rising group interests, technological innovation and organized crimes locally and globally and the ever evolving security threats among others. Thus, to respond to these challenges, there is need for innovative approaches in the training and research aimed at preparing highly skilled security professionals with capabilities to develop relevant policies and mitigation strategies that correspond to the emerging global, regional and local dynamic security environments.

Entry Requirements

A holder of a Master’s degree of Kenyatta University or equivalent qualifications from any other University recognized by Kenyatta University Senate as being an institution of comparable status to that of Kenyatta University with a course work component in any one of the following specializations: Security Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Political Science, Peace Studies, International Relations, Public Policy, Africa Studies, Economics, Environmental security, Military Science, Forensic Science. ii) A holder of a Master’s degree in a closely related area of specialization and has at least three years postgraduate research experience or teaching in the subject area, and can provide proven evidence of research ability in the form of papers, reports, manuscripts, portfolios or other published works. iii) Besides the Master’s degree, the applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized and accredited university.
